Setting Out Participants 2018 at the Goldsmiths' Centre revealed
The Goldsmiths’ Centre in London is delighted to reveal the six talented, emerging jewellery and silversmithing businesses chosen for this year’s prestigious business incubation course, Setting Out 2018.
Now in its 6th year, Setting Out sees participating young businesses benefit from a central London based studio space and a year of intensive business, creative and product development training, helping them to establish solid foundations upon which to grow their business. Taught by a team of top industry specialists, each participant receives over 40 one-to-one and group mentoring sessions on over 30 topics, supporting them to develop a three-year business plan and launch a new product range.
This year’s Setting Out participants include jeweller and silversmith Jessica Jue, whose award-winning work explores the themes of balance and harmony, and former sculptural installation artist and founder of Le Ster jewellery, Aishleen Lester. They are joined by talented jewellers Holly O’Hanlon, Judith Peterhoff, Margaux Clavel and Yasmin Belkhayat.
Jewellery designer Leonid Dementiev, Setting Out alumnus 2018 explains: “Starting and running a creative business is always very challenging because the person must be both creative and have a mindset of a business person to be successful. In my opinion, from talking to many Master degree students in both the artistic industry and business industry, Setting Out is one of a kind because it helps creative people to understand the business side of the world they are trying to enter. It is not a business course and it is not a creative course, it is a mix of both which is really rare.”
Applications for Setting Out 2019 close on Sunday 19 May 2019. For more information and to find out how to apply, please visit www.goldsmiths-centre.org/courses/setting-out
About the Setting Out Participants 2018
Aishleen Lester, Le Ster jewellery
Aishleen Lester is the founder of Le Ster jewellery and designer of “The Light Through The Grey” collection. Having studied at the Royal Academy of Arts and Kensington Chelsea College, her early career as a sculptural installation artist saw her create large scale pieces for private collections and work with internationally renowned galleries in London and New York. Keen to make work on a different scale, Aishleen subsequently immersed herself into the world of jewellery and was awarded a place on the International Jewellery London’s prestigious Kickstart programme in 2018.
Jessica Jue
Jessica Jue is a London based jeweller and silversmith who explores a wide range of traditional techniques, which are used to craft beautiful, contemporary designs. A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art and Bishopsland Educational Trust, Jessica explores the themes of balance and harmony, creating a sense of rhythm across her collections. The fluidity of form in her work allows a visual narrative to pass between all her pieces. Jessica exhibited at Goldsmiths’ Fair in 2017 as a recipient of a Goldsmiths’ Fair Graduate Bursary and as part of Collect at The Saatchi Gallery in 2018.
Holly O'Hanlon
Irish jeweller Holly O’Hanlon creates collections that play with the flux of creation and destruction. Using mild steel and slate, she sets layers of materials with handcrafted staples, enamelled thumbtacks and screws, toying with the depiction of moments of corrosion and human contact; and intervenes with the surface to find a controlled clarity and preciousness to these everyday seemingly haphazard compositions. A graduate of Central St Martins, her jewellery has been showcased with Marzee for Starters at Collect 2018, Schmuck 2018 in Munich and the Modern Life exhibition at Gill Wing Jewellery.
Judith Petertoff
German born Judith Peterhoff founded her jewellery brand in 2016, having graduated with a BA in Contemporary Jewellery from the Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht in the Netherlands and spent six years immersing herself in the Hatton Garden jewellery trade. Her most recent collection takes inspiration from the human form. Showcasing the natural beauty in the elements that make us unique. Organic textures evolve from classic jewellery structures in Judith’s collection. Using her unique take on the technique of chasing, she works from flat sheets of metal forging them into three dimensional forms to look as though they have grown.
Margaux Clavel
Margaux Clavel is the name behind the jewellery brand WWAN(1), which stands for We Will Always Need, and plays with the concepts of uniqueness and needs. Trained in jewellery schools in Paris and Lyon, Margaux moved to London to study at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2013. Based in East London, her collections are opulent and elegant, drawing inspiration from Victorian cut jewellery to Art-Deco and Roman pieces. Harking back to the past, she puts a new twist on traditional styles, creating beautifully handcrafted edgy classics.
Yasmin Belkhayat
Yasmin Belkhayat, founder of jewellery brand Kenza Lomhara, is a South London based jeweller and enameller whose work is inspired by both contemporary geometric forms and traditional intricate patterns, both found in nature and manmade. Yasmin studied at University of Maynooth and British Academy of Jewellery and has been recognised for her enamelling skills, winning both the Guild of Enamellers Bursary Award in 2018 and two awards at the Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council Awards 2018. Her jewellery pieces are like precious treasures that hold events and moments in time; and pay homage and tribute to her Irish and Moroccan roots with ‘Kenza’ meaning ‘Treasure’ in Arabic and ‘Lomhara’ meaning ‘Precious in Gaelic’.
