Hand Engraving with the Creative Dimension
In August 2016 we welcomed a group of ten talented young people, aged 14 to 18, to the Goldsmiths’ Centre through The Creative Dimension Trust.
Launched by Penny Bendall, The Creative Dimension nurtures hand-on crafts skills through workshops led by professional crafts specialists who are keen to help the next generation to fulfill their potential. Professional silversmith Angus McFadyen was on hand for the week to show the group the basics of hand engraving. Take a sneak peek into the Jewellery Workshop at the Goldsmiths' Centre where the young people learnt to hand engrave.
As Angus explained in an interview for The Silversmith’s Art: Made in Britain Today exhibition: “For quite a long time now the technique that takes up the most of my time is engraving and carving. Engraving is very versatile and can be used in lots of ways. It can be straight forward drawing on the metal, it can be bright cut to give the very best effect from an engraved line, or it can be matted back to strengthen the appearance of more three dimensional carving.”
This workshop was funded by The Goldsmiths’ Company Members’ Charitable Fund. Other summer courses organised by The Creative Dimension, working with City & Guilds of London Art School and the Building Crafts College, included Gilding and Marquetry, Mural Painting, Stone Working and Woodwork.
