The Goldsmiths’ Centre celebrates the future of design and craft, part of the London Design Festival
From 19 to 22 September 2016 the Goldsmiths’ Centre in the heart of Clerkenwell joins over 400 event and exhibition venues across London as part of the London Design Festival (LDF) and celebrates the future of design and craft – from digital innovation and scale-modelling to consumer behaviour. During the festival, the Goldsmiths’ Centre will be hosting Creative Links Talks, in collaboration with top jewellery designers and the trend consultancy The Future Laboratory, CAD Taster Workshops for those in the design field with software training provider Simply Rhino, alongside the exhibition Silver Speaks: Form showcasing the work by talented members of Contemporary British Silversmiths (CBS).

The Goldsmiths’ Centre takes part in the London Design Festival for the fourth year bringing together goldsmiths with the wider design community in recognition of its core values “Creativity, Craftsmanship, Community”. The Creative Links Talks held in the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s Exhibition Room kick-start on 19 September with a fascinating evening discussion from 6pm – 8pm Craft and Architecture, featuring silversmiths Vicki Ambery-Smith and Mary Ann Simmons in conversation. They will explore the relationship between craft and architecture, the role of model-making and what makes great design irrespective of scale.
This will be followed over the three days by insightful talks with Future Laboratory, one of the world’s most renowned future consultancies, who help businesses to harness market trends, adapt to emerging consumer needs, position themselves for success and keep ahead of competitors. On 22 September from 6pm to 8.30pm Future Luxury examines how the rules of luxury are being rewritten as consumer motivation for luxury products, services and brands evolve to create bespoke experiences and satisfy more intellectual needs. From 6pm to 8.30pm on 20 September and 21 September, Whole System Craftsmanship and Digital Disruption look at how technological and digital innovation is merging with the environment and the art of making; the challenges of this process and how this is being reflected in design, art and craftsmanship.
To further explore the potential of digital applications and how this is redefining the makers’ processes and toolbox, the Goldsmiths’ Centre has collaborated with Simply Rhino to offer morning Simply Rhino Design Taster Sessions across the three days (20, 21 and 22 September, 10.30am to 12pm) introducing the use and possibilities of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software in furniture, product, visual merchandising and architectural design. The exhibition Silver Speaks: Form, on display in the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s glass-roofed Atrium until 23 September 2016, shines the spotlight on over 30 pieces of work by talented members of Contemporary British Silversmiths (CBS). It explores the different skills and techniques that enable makers to create striking work in silver - the diverse application of tools and materials, from traditional methods to new technologies.
