News: Former The London Art Works apprentice, Maddy Rowe, named Goldsmiths‘ Company Apprentice of the Year winner
The Apprentice of the Year Award is a prestigious accolade, awarded since 2015, which sees fellow apprentices nominate peers who have gone above and beyond the requirements of the 700-year-old Goldsmiths’ Company Apprenticeship Scheme. Maddy Rowe was recognised early on in her career for her exceptional talent and was awarded the Silver Cellini Award for Excellence after completing her first year of training on the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s Foundation Programme in 2018. She went on to complete her apprenticeship as a Diamond Mounter at The London Art Works during which she won a bronze award at the National World Skills competition in Birmingham 2019, subsequently being selected for the UK squad.
David Marshall, Maddy’s employer at The London Art Works Ltd commended her achievement and remarked that:
“Maddy has been an exemplary student who has worked hard throughout her apprentice years. It has been wonderful to see her skills and confidence develop over the years. I, the craftsmen who trained her, and all the staff at The London Art Works think that this award is well deserved, and we are all very proud of her.”
Helen Dobson, Programme Manager (Education) at the Goldsmiths’ Centre, explains:
“This year’s entire apprentice cohort have worked exceptionally hard throughout their apprenticeships and have produced outstanding masterpieces, which will be exhibited at the Goldsmiths’ Centre this Summer. Maddy was selected as the 2023 Apprentice of the Year by her peers due to her support of others and willingness to go above and beyond what was required of her.”
Maddy’s Masterpiece, which marked the formal end to her apprenticeship, can be admired alongside her fellow apprentices in the free Apprentice to Masterpiece: The Work of the Goldsmiths’ Apprentices exhibition from 21 June until 15 September 2023.
