In spring 2018, Engraver Angus McFayden brings his skills to the Goldsmith’s Centre and invites you to join him in learning and experimenting with a range of techniques to create your own unique engraved pieces on metal.
You will learn how to draw creations on copper as if it were a sheet of paper, and develop skills in mark-marking. Angus will show you how to make and care for a set of your own hand-engraving tools, and you will learn how to use these to create amazing effects.
During the last session, we will also have a technician present from the City & Guilds of London Art School to work with you in creating prints on paper from your engravings, as an additional work to take home.
What is The Creative Dimension Trust?
The courses run by The Creative Dimension Trust are spaces where you can work with an expert craftsperson; learning and experimenting with interesting techniques alongside other 14-18 year olds.
For each course, the featured craftspeople will design workshops inspired by their practice. The Trust work to make sure each course gives you the opportunity to explore subjects which may be difficult to find out about or try otherwise.
Each course has an application process – where the Trust will choose people who have a strong interest in working with their hands and working creatively.
Who is the tutor?
Angus McFayden is the Chair of the Hand Engravers Association of Great Britain. When Angus began his career, his formal training was minimal and so a strong element of his work philosophy is, ‘try it and see.’
Through playful use of tools he likes to explore the range of possibilities of transforming metal, and he is inspired by everything from patterns, artwork, fossils, and the work of other craftspeople he admires.
